Memory Foam Mattress Guide

You have heard about memory foam mattresses, right?

But have you tried to get one for yourself or understand the reasons behind the unique behaviour of these products?

If not, you have landed at the right place because here, we will briefly explain the memory foam mattresses. After that, we will shift to the main highlight of this discussion- tips to choose the best mattress with memory foam construction.

What is a memory foam mattress?

A mattress is made from different materials like latex, regular foams, coir, springs, and more. But, memory foam is one such material whose properties and features are unmatched. You wouldn’t find any other material showing the same behaviour as the memory foam. So, our question is why we call it memory foam, and what does the mattress do?

The memory foam is made from highly viscous polyurethane material that responds to heat and pressure. For example, when you press down the mattress with your palm, the foam will depress and take the shape of your palm due to the pressure application and your body heat. It will hug your palm like a fabric.

Once you remove your hand, no pressure or heat will contact the foam. Therefore, it will slowly start regaining its shape and become even.

Types of memory foams used in the mattress

Memory foams are of different types available in the market. These are:

  1. Regular memory foam mattresses where the main layer is made from this material and an additional support layer is present.
  2. In-gel memory foam mattresses are filled with micro gel molecules that can absorb the surface heat and keep the mattress top cold and comfortable.
  3. Open-cell memory foams have huge pockets inside that are filled with air. These mattresses have high responsiveness and can support your body in the best manner.
  4. Latex memory foam combines regular mattresses with a natural latex material. Then, the pin core structure is achieved to improve the airflow.

How to choose the best memory foam mattress for yourself?

Choosing the best memory foam mattress from the market is not easy. You cannot simply select a random product because your health is highly dependent on it. So, before you make any decision, judge the chosen mattresses based on the factors described below.

1. Size

The first thing you need to consider is the size of the mattress. Some brands offer custom sizing products where you can order the length and breadth as per the shape of your bed. On the other hand, if you want to buy standard mattresses, make sure that their length and breadth are by your bed’s size.

2. Warranty

Check the warranty on the chosen memory foam mattress before moving ahead. If you want to use the product for a long time, you should look for mattresses with a warranty period of five years and above. Apart from this, you also have to check the warranty policies and the kind of damages for which you can return the product or ask for a replacement.

3. Memory foam type

As discussed above, there are different types of memory foam. Therefore, based on your requirements, you have to choose the best one. For example, if you live in a hot area and don’t have an AC in the room, go for the gel-infused memory foam mattresses as they can absorb the surface heat and keep the bed cool. Similarly, if you want a firmer memory foam mattress, the latex will be more suitable and viable.

4. Support layers

Memory foam is mainly used as a comfort layer in the mattress. Without any support, it will suffer from sagging or depression much earlier. Therefore, you should check whether the chosen product has proper support layers or not. For example, you can go for a product having regular memory foam and an HR foam or HD foam as the base. These materials are firmer and prevent the sagging of the comfort layer by absorbing impact forces.

5. Thickness

The thickness of the memory foam mattress will depend on the total weight acting upon its surface. For example, a 5-inch mattress is suitable for sleeper/sleepers having a combined body weight of up to 150 kilograms, while a 10-inch product can endure a weight of up to 300 kilos. If the weight increases, it will cause sagging, and the memory foam will lose its viscosity and won’t be able to perform as per expectations.

6. Firmness

You need to choose a mattress whose firmness is ideal for your health. For example, if you want to cuddle on the bed or revel in its softness, choose a product with firmness varying between 5 and 5.5. On the contrary, if you want the memory foam mattress to support your body shape or the spinal alignment, the firmness level should be six or more.

Additional features to look for in the memory foam mattresses

There are some additional features based on which you can further understand what kind of memory foam will be suitable for you.

  1. Ensure that the chosen product is made from a breathable top cover that will distribute the heat evenly and prevent the growth of microbes or mould.
  2. Always choose a mattress whose memory foam layer can prevent motion transfer from one point to the other. This way, you won’t have to suffer from disturbances, even if your partner turns continuously.
  3. It would help to focus on the edge support feature because such a mattress won’t sag easily along the edges.
  4. Ensure that the chosen memory foam mattress can last for a long time without forming any cracks or tears.

Conclusion

Now that you know everything about memory foam mattresses, we are certain that you won’t have any problem choosing the best product from the market. Just make sure that the product has features suitable for your health and not the opposite. Apart from this, check the mattresses within your budget so that you don’t have to spend too much on the product.
